One of the easiest upgrades for any BMW enthusiast is installing new transmission mounts. This will cover the removal and replacement of the transmission mounts on your 5/6 speed E46.
Required Tools
- 2 Floor Jacks
- 4 Jack Stands
- Hockey Puck or Small Block of Wood
- 3/8" Ratchet or Impact Wrench
- Extension
- 13mm Socket
- 13mm stubby wrench
- 13mm long wrench
Removal
Step 1: Raise vehicle and place on jack stands. Ensure that all jack stands are secure and the vehicle is not rocking on jack stands.
Step 2: Place floor jack underneath the middle of a transmission. Place hockey puck or wood on the jack pad surface. Raise the jack to support transmission. Slightly raise the transmission to relieve pressure on the transmission brace and mounts.
Step 3: Using 13mm socket, extension, and impact wrench unbolt the two 13mm nuts holding the stock transmission mounts to the transmission brace.
Step 4: Using the same tools as in the previous step unbolt the 4 bolts holding the transmission brace to the chassis and remove the brace.
Step 5: Using the 13mm wrench loosen the 13mm bolts that secure the transmission mounts to the transmission and remove old mounts.
Installation
Step 1: Install the transmission bracket with loose bolts so it can slide back and forward
Step 2: Slightly raise the transmission so that the bushing can slide in place with the bolt and washer going on top of the ear of the transmission. Install the washer and nut on the bottom
Step 3: Install the transmission mounting bracket as far forward as possible and tighten the hardware securing it to the chassis till it's snug.
Step 4: Lower the trans on the bushings and tighten trans bushings bolts and torque everything to 16ftlbs
